In 1991 a Finnish computer science student, Linus Torvalds, began programming a version of UNIX. During development he published not only the binaries (the executable code) but also the source to his project on the Internet. Shortly there after many thousands of developers began contributing to this project. The only condition to contributing to the project was that the source code for each component was made available to the general public. The legal basis for this condition is provided by the GPL (General Public Licence). These global development efforts have given rise to the Linux operating system which is now synonymous with stability, security and performance, and it's free!
Linux is constantly evolving; becoming more powerful, more flexible, more supportive (of hardware) and more user friendly. Linux now powers 90% of the world's web server market and a growing demand for desktop applications is seeing it become a more competitive desktop operating solution.
